The route of the old Derby to Nottingham canal at the back of the pub is followed West until it meets a lane. Turning right, the lane leads to a farm where the footpath skirts right and then turns right along a hedge. Through the hedge, the path leads diagonally across fields to the sports ground at Risley. The pavement on Breaston Lane and Derby Road leads through the village until a track turns off South towards a bridge spanning the A52. The footpath then heads South parallel to the M1 until it meets the old canal, where a right turn leads back to the pub.
On the recce, the only livestock was some ponies in a small field. The route is on well-trodden paths, tracks or across grassy uncultivated fields, with a couple of fields growing wheat. There is a gentle slope uphill in Risley, then all level or downhill after. The downside is the nine or ten stiles through hedges with brambles intruding. It will be slow going with some people needing help over the stiles. Shorts are not recommended.
If you want to have a look at the lunch menu, it is on the pub website at :- https://www.navigationinnbreaston.co.uk/food/
